Amanda Beard

Olympian, Author, Mother

Amanda Beard used to be known as the 14 year-old girl carrying her teddy bear at the 1996 Olympic Games. That year she won silver medals in the 100-meter and 200-meter breaststrokes, and gold in the medley relay. Her young-teen manner captured the attention of the media, and she was often photographed clutching her teddy bear, even on the medal stand.

After 1996, Amanda won a bronze medal in the 200-meter breaststroke at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. Amanda attended the University of Arizona where she captured an individual NCAA National Championship in 2001. In 2003 she became the world champion and world record holder in the 200-meter breaststroke. At the Athens Olympic Games in 2004, Amanda won her first individual gold medal in the 200-meter breaststroke and a silver medal in the 200-meter individual medley.

She is the winner of eight United States National titles - three times in both the 200m breaststroke and the 100m breaststroke, plus twice in the 200m individual medley – and she was ranked first in a world for 200m breaststrokers in 2003.

Amanda has also made her mark out of the water. When she isn’t swimming, her energy is focused on building her personal brand. As a huge advocate for leading a healthy lifestyle and taking care of oneself, she is currently a partial owner of Mission Skincare Products, a line designed for active people. Mission also endorses super stars such as Dwayne Wade and Serena Williams.

A wife and mother of one, Amanda connects with mothers and fans by actively blogging about her passion for raising her son, sharing ups and downs through the journey of motherhood, recipes and workouts for followers to try.

In April 2012, Amanda released her first book, In the Water They Can’t See You Cry, an uplifting memoir revealing the truth of the Olympic spotlight, the battles that came along the way and her newfound happiness.

She is currently training to compete in the 2012 London Olympics.
