Barbara K. Hofer: Simon & Schuster Speakers Bureau

Barbara K. Hofer

Educational, Developmental, and Cultural Psychologist

The transition to college has typically initiated a phase of life where individuals become increasingly more responsible over time for their own decisions and behavior, more self-regulating of their own learning, and more autonomous from their parents. In recent years, however, cell phones, unlimited calling plans, email, instant messaging, and text messaging have made it possible for college students and their parents to remain in frequent contact. Based on the results of her recent research, Barbara K. Hofer, Ph.D. reports on current communication patterns across the college years and how this is related to student development during the period of emerging adulthood. She also discusses the implications of her findings for colleges, parents, and students.

Dr. Hofer is a Professor of Psychology at Middlebury College, and the co-author of The iConnected Parent: Staying Close to Your Kids in College (and Beyond) while Letting Them Grow Up. She is an educational, developmental, and cultural psychologist whose research focuses primarily on adolescence and the transition to adulthood. Her research on “the electronic tether” has been cited in the New York Times, Newsweek, the Chicago Tribune, Inside Higher Ed, the Wall Street Journal, the Boston Globe, USA Today, and numerous other publications, and she has appeared on the CBS Early Show, Wisconsin Public Radio, Philadelphia Public Radio, NYC’s Brian Lehrer Show, and many others.

Hofer received her Ph.D. from the University of Michigan and Ed.M. from Harvard and is the recipient of national awards for both teaching and research, including the Early Career Teaching Excellence Award from the American Psychological Association, the Research Review Award from the American Educational Research Association, and the Fidler Award for research from the National Resource Center. She is the author of several dozen articles and book chapters, serves on the editorial board of several journals, is a frequent reviewer for two dozen others, and has presented her research widely at national and international conferences. She was recently named a Fellow of the American Psychological Association.
