Courtney Sheinmel: Simon & Schuster Speakers Bureau

Courtney Sheinmel

Young Adult Author, Lawyer, Philanthropist

Courtney Sheinmel grew up in California and New York, graduated magna cum laude from Barnard College, and attended Fordham University School of Law. After working as a litigator for several years, she decided to focus on her true love: writing. Her critically-acclaimed debut “tween” novel, My So-Called Family , follows eighth grader Leah Hoffman-Ross, who was conceived by sperm donor and who goes in search of her donor siblings. Published in October 2008, Publishers Weekly’s starred review called the book “Smart, original and full of vitality.”

An in demand speaker, Sheinmel has addressed school groups, libraries, and universities, on the subjects of writing and the topics explored in her books.

Sheinmel began volunteering with the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation in 1991, when she was thirteen years old. Her second book, Positively, came out in September 2009. Though fictional, it was in part inspired by her involvement with the Foundation, telling the story of seventh grader Emmy Price, who is HIV-positive, and who loses her mother to AIDS. Actor Marlee Matlin wrote, “Never preachy, Emmy’s story feels as if you’ve delved into her personal diary. I cried and smiled and eventually felt a sisterhood with Emmy whose message ‘anything is possible’ made me cheer.” Positively was recently named a CBC/NCSS Notable Social Studies Trade Book and included in the New York Public Library’s 2010 Stuff for the Teen Age list. A portion of the proceeds from book sales benefit the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundaiton.

Sheinmel is also the author of the upcoming Sincerely Sophie/Sincerely Katie and You Can’t Even Measure It. She lives in New York City. You can visit her online at www.courtneysheinmel.com.
