David O. Stewart

Constitutional Lawyer & Preeminent Historian

After practicing law for more than 25 years, David O. Stewart decided to put his passion on paper and began writing history. His first book, The Summer of 1787: The Men Who Invented the Constitution, takes readers beyond the history text book rendition of the US Constitution’s inception and delves further into the characters of the men charged with writing it. Stewart examines the personal beliefs of our Founding Fathers and how their values of pride for one’s country and of democracy led to the creation of the United State’s most prized document, the US Constitution. The Summer of 1787 became a Washington Post bestseller and won the Washington Writing Award as Best Book in 2007.

Stewart’s second book, Impeached: The Trial of President Andrew Johnson and the Fight for Lincoln’s Legacy. Stewart, who defended a Senate impeachment trial as a lawyer, revisits Johnson’s impeachment and challenges the popular belief that Johnson was Lincoln’s rightful political successor. Impeached discusses actions Johnson took in office that hindered the rights of free slaves, and explores the scheming and corruption that surrounded the first presidential impeachment.

In his most recent book, American Emperor: Aaron Burr’s Challenge to Jefferson’s America, Stewart unfolds the extraordinary story of this charismatic and mysterious adventurer who was the national’s third vice president, won a duel against Alexander Hamilton, and sought to carve a new empire out of the American continent.

At the podium Stewart discusses these important moments and figures in American history and relates how their actions shaped our nation today. By making history relevant to contemporary business and government, his message is valuable for corporate groups and as well as entertaining for any lover of history.

Stewart lives in Washington, DC and is the president of the Washington Independent Review, an e-book review website.
