Deirdre Imus

Environmental and Children's Health Advocate

Deirdre Imus is the Founder and President of The Deirdre Imus Environmental Center for Pediatric Oncology® at Hackensack University Medical Center. Driven by the mission to enhance health by educating our children, their parents and the public-at-large about the carcinogens that occur all too commonly in our lives, Deirdre serves as a voice to help shape policy decisions that impact the environment and our well being. She is also Co-Founder and Co-Director of the Imus Cattle Ranch for Kids with Cancer.

The Center represents one of the first hospital-based programs whose specific mission is to identify, control, and ultimately prevent exposures to environmental factors that may cause adult-and especially pediatric cancer-as well as other health problems with our children. All profits from the Center’s industrial cleaning products supports this mission.

As President, Deirdre has played a major role as The Environmental Center has advised hundreds of organizations including hospitals, schools, government agencies and major corporations on "green" materials and "sustainable" practices. The Environmental Center advised HUMC on environmental materials and processes that are contributing to superior indoor air quality at the medical center’s new Sarkis & Siran Gabrellian Women’s and Children’s Pavilion, one of the first environmentally-responsible “green” hospitals in the country. The Environmental Protection Agency recognized the Environmental Center’s “greening” efforts with a regional Quality Award in 2006.

The Deirdre Imus Environmental Center developed the award-winning Greening the Cleaning® program, a program dedicated to the means elimination of all cleaning agents containing hazardous ingredients and replacing them with environmentally responsible ingredients with the least level of toxicity. Hundreds of healthcare facilities, government authorities, businesses and schools have implemented the program to date, with direct savings in cleaning costs ranging from budget neutral to 75%. Hackensack University Medical Center, which was the first to convert to the Greening the Cleaning® program in 2001, has experienced a 15% cost savings as a direct result.

In addition to her time at the Center, Deirdre and her husband run the Imus Cattle Ranch for Kids with Cancer, an authentic 4,000 acre working cattle ranch in northern New Mexico which provides the experience of the American cowboy to children suffering from cancer and various blood diseases, as well as to children who have lost a brother or sister to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). Funding for the camp comes from in part from all of the profits from the Environmental Center’s retail line of cleaning products.

Numerous organizations have recognized Deirdre’s environmental health leadership. In May 2008, the USO of Metropolitan New York honored her as "Woman of the Year." She played a leadership role in the passage of the historic $945 million Combating Autism Act of 2006. Consequently, she was named "Person of the Year" by Spectrum, a magazine for the families of children with autism, as well as a “Champion for Autism” by The Autism Education Foundation of the Morris-Union Jointure Commission in New Jersey. Among her other awards, she has received the Rachel Carson Award from the National Audubon Society for her contributions to conservation, an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from Pace University and the Excellence in Cancer Awareness Award by the Cancer Research and Prevention Foundation.

Deirdre is the author of two New York Times bestsellers -- the newest book in the Green This! series, Growing Up Green, Baby and Child Care; a practical family guide to raising children in an ever increasing toxic world; and Green This! Volume 1: Greening Your Cleaning, offering a wealth of insights and expertise for protecting families from harmful chemicals. She is also author of The Imus Ranch: Cooking for Kids and Cowboys, a national bestseller, and a frequent contributor to the Huffington Post.

Deirdre serves on the boards of several children’s health organizations, including the National Autism Association, Safe Minds, Generation Rescue, SKIP of New York, and East Harlem Council for Human Services, Inc., Boriken Neighborhood Health Center.
