Dr. Judy Melinek is a graduate of Harvard University. She trained at UCLA in medicine and pathology, graduating in 1996. She is board-certified in anatomic, clinical and forensic pathology. Her fellowship training at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in New York from 2001-2003 is the subject of the memoir Working Stiff, which she co-wrote with her husband, T.J Mitchell. Currently, Dr. Melinek is an Associate Clinical Professor at the University of California-San Francisco, and works as a forensic pathologist in San Francisco and Oakland,
California, where is a contract pathologist for the Alameda County Sheriff's Office. She travels nationally and internationally to lecture on forensic pathology, and has been consulted as a forensic expert in many high-profile legal cases, as well as for the television shows E.R., Mythbusters and Dr. Oz. She is President and CEO of PathologyExpert Inc., a forensic medico-legal consulting firm based in San Francisco, CA.

T.J. Mitchell graduated with an English degree from Harvard University and worked in the film industry before becoming a full-time stay-at-home dad and screenplay consultant in 2000. He is currently writing First Cut, the debut book in a medical examiner detective fiction series, with Judy Melinek as co-author. The couple and their three children live in San Francisco.
