Mark Bittman

Beloved Food Writer, New York Times Columnist (“The Minimalist”), Public Television Host, & Author of the Best-selling, Award-winning How to Cook Everything

Mark Bittman is responsible for changing the way America eats, and perhaps more importantly, how we think about food. As one of the country's best-known and widely admired food writers, Bittman has succeeded in convincing a generation raised on frozen food and take-out that they too can cook—and cook well. In his weekly New York Times food column, his monthly New York Times travel features, his bestselling cookbooks, and his award-winning television series, Bittman grabs our attention–and keeps it.

He is the creator of the wildly popular column “The Minimalist,” and daily blog “Bitten,” both for The New York Times. Now in its eleventh year, “The Minimalist” is beloved for Bittman’s straightforward writing style, simple recipes, and accompanying web videos. Bittman inspires both veteran and novice cooks to do more with less, try new things and be conscious about the impact their food choices have on the world at large—all while having fun in the kitchen.

Food Matters: A Guide to Conscious Eating with 75 Recipes, Bittman’s groundbreaking work on food, diet, and climate change, (Simon & Schuster January 2009) will further challenge our assumptions about food. Bittman explores our eating habits and the subsequent impact on not only the planet but also our own health. At the podium, Bittman expounds upon his philosophy, as well as his own personal experiences as a cook, food lover, and journalist. He shows audiences how food is a window into not only how we live, but also the environment, politics, and the world at large.

Bittman can be seen on PBS’s Spain: On the Road Again with Gwyneth Paltrow and Mario Batali. Bittman also hosted the award winning PBS series Bittman Takes on America's Chefs and The Best Recipes in the World which has been nominated for a prestigious James Beard Award.

He is the author of numerous cookbooks including the modern-day bibles of basic cooking How to Cook Everything and How to Cook Everything Vegetarian. Among his other works are the best-selling, Fish: The Complete Guide to Buying and Cooking, currently in its eighth printing; and the highly regarded The Best Recipes in the World. He's also produced the award-winning "Minimalist" cookbook series: The Minimalist Cooks at Home, The Minimalist Cooks Dinner, and The Minimalist Entertains, now collected in Mark Bittman's Simple and Easy Recipes from the New York Times. He and the internationally celebrated chef, Jean-Georges Vongerichten brought elegant food to the home cook with their best-selling collaborations, Jean-Georges: Cooking at Home with a Four-Star Chef; and Simple to Spectacular: How to Take One Basic Recipe to Four Levels of Sophistication.

Bittman is the winner of numerous awards, including the Julia Child general cookbook award, the James Beard general cookbook award, the IACP/Julia Child award, the James Beard Award for the best cooking series and three other major international cookbook awards.
