Nick Tasler

Author, Speaker, Performance Expert

The Director of Research & Development for cutting edge think tank TalentSmart, Nick Tasler is helping businesses work better and employees think smarter. His award winning book, The Impulse Factor: Why Some of Us Play It Safe & Why Others Risk It All, takes a groundbreaking new look at the two types of decision makers steering today’s organizations.

Drawing on years of research and the latest discoveries in genetics, neurology and management theory, Tasler explores how each type of decision maker weighs risk and opportunity when making decisions. The cautious majority of decision makers, the ones Tasler calls the risk managers, are those who either make carefully considered decisions or become hopelessly lost in the fog of details. The other type of decision maker, part of a much smaller part of the population, is endowed with impulsive tendencies that can lead to fast and decisive action or to foolish choices.

Decidedly impulsive, Tasler began his career with Andersen Consulting in Chicago. One day he decided that his formal study of psychology was not yet complete and decided to go back to school. Following three cross country moves in less than a year, he settled in San Diego, where he enrolled in the first graduate program he found that would allow him to start immediately. After landing the right job and finding the right mate to balance his impulsive tendencies, he wondered if impulsivity— commonly regarded as a person’s worst enemy—could also be a person’s best friend.

Bringing his expertise to the podium, Tasler demonstrates for audiences how their unique tendencies impact each one of the hundreds of choices they make every day. Tasler’s program vividly illustrates how susceptible we are to the events around us and how our reactions often run contrary to our best interests. With examples from business, psychology, and his own research of extreme decision making, Tasler teaches audiences how to thrive when faced with difficult choices.

Tasler has worked with and studied all types of people, from corporate executives to cosmetology students. His skill at bridging the gap between complex concepts and simple solutions has directly benefited multinational corporations like GE and Coca Cola as well as small, privately owned enterprises and industries ranging from Government to Healthcare and Pharmaceuticals to Financial Services. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from the University of Iowa and a Master’s Degree in Industrial/Organizational Psychology from National University. He lives with his family in Minneapolis, Minnesota…for now.
