Master Pastry Chef, former Executive Pastry Chef for the White House

Dr. Roland R. Mesnier, also known as Chef Roland, is an internationally renowned and awarded Master Pastry Chef. He is best known as the former Executive Pastry Chef for the White House, beginning in 1979 when he was hired by First Lady Rosalynn Carter after a nationwide search. Over a period of twenty-five years, he served five presidents: Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, George H. Bush, Bill Clinton, and George W. Bush. Throughout his tenure, he created uniquely designed special confections for the first families of the White House and their guests and international dignitaries, including forty queens, kings, princes, princesses and heads of state. His fame and influence continually grew over the years as his desserts became the highlight of every State Dinner and First Family celebration. He was known for conducting extensive research in order to create opulent confections that were tailored to each special guest -- an artist’s interpretation of their personality, contribution to society, or their culture.. With all the hundreds of desserts he has prepared for State Dinners over the years, he has never once made the same dessert twice.

Chef Roland’s genius as a pastry artist derives from his passion and dedication to his craft. He began his career at the age of fourteen, and went on to work at the world’s most prestigious hotels, such as the Savoy (London, George V (Paris), The Princess (Bermuda), and the Homestead (Virginia).

Chef Roland is the former honorary President of the World Cup of Pastry, and has received many awards, including The Legion of Honor Award Meilleur Ouvrier de France.

He developed the first professional pastry program in the Washington DC area, at L'Academie de Cuisine in Bethesda, Maryland.

The author of three books, Dessert University, All the Presidents’ Pastries, and Basics to Beautiful Cakes, Chef Roland lectures widely all over the country and has appeared on dozens of national and local television and and radio programs, including NBC’s Today Show, CNN, Fox News, and NPR.

Chef Roland lives in Virginia.
