Tchicaya Missamou

Former African Child Soldier turned American War Hero

Tchicaya Missamou was born in Congo-Brazzaville, subsisting in relative peace with his 15 brothers and sisters until civil war swept the country in 1992. At age 13, he was yanked into the brutal life of a child soldier, witnessing unspeakable atrocities. After years of violence and tragedy, Missamou resolved to save lives instead of taking them, and began using his military connections to ferry white diplomats out of the country. As a result of this, Missamou gained great wealth, but at an enormous cost – his family was brutalized and in 1997, he was forced to flee the country of his birth.

Incredibly, that was only the start of his journey. Missamou’s wanderings led him to America where, after being robbed at gunpoint on his first day in the country, he managed to fulfill a lifelong dream and joined the U.S. Marine Corps. He served on military deployments all over the world including Iraq, where he was instrumental in the discovery and release of private Jessica Lynch in 2003. After obtaining his citizenship for valor and service in the armed forces, Missamou returned to the Congo to rescue his family. There, seven years after his initial departure, he was captured, beaten, shot and jailed. His second, and final, escape back to the United States is a harrowing tale of one man’s relentless quest for freedom and for the American dream.

At the podium and in his heart-pounding memoir, In the Shadow of Freedom: A Heroic Journey to Liberation, Manhood, and America, he shares with audiences his uplifting story of one man's quest to achieve the American Dream. Missamou's life is a shining example of why America is a gift that should not be taken for granted, and why we are limited only by the breadth of our imagination and the strength of our will.

Utilizing the lessons of his violent upbringing and his decades of military training, Missamou founded the Warrior Fitness, a high-end personal training facility in Valencia, CA. Today, living with his wife and three children, he is an incredibly successful business owner, a living testament to the human will, and a perfect example of the positive effects of immigration.
