It's hard not to cringe at the humiliating start to Richard Nixon's courtship of his future wife.

As Will Swift chronicles in his largely sympathetic examination of one of America's most mysterious political couples, the infatuated young man who would rise to become leader of the free world agreed to chauffeur Pat to Los Angeles for her dates with other men — even as she rebuffed his attempts to woo her.

"If he promised not to make any more marriage proposals or avowals of love, she would allow him to drive her up Whittier Boulevard into Los Angeles on Friday evenings and to pick her up on Sunday afternoons after she had enjoyed her weekend dates," recounts Swift, who had access to love letters and other correspondence that weren't available to earlier biographers while he wrote Pat and Dick: The Nixons, An Intimate Portrait of Marriage.
