Thomas N. Bradbury & Benjamin R. Karney

Award-winning UCLA Professors, Authors of Love Me Slender, Experts on Relationships, Marriage, and Health

Professors in the Department of Psychology at the University of California, Los Angeles, Thomas N. Bradbury and Benjamin R. Karney are among the world’s leading scholars of social relationships, interpersonal communication, marriage, and well-being. Through in-depth interviews and detailed observations of thousands of couples, Drs. Bradbury and Karney have discovered the surprising ways in which personal histories, current life circumstances, and specific forms of interpersonal communication all combine to determine the quality and course of couples’ intimate lives. Their findings have been reported in more than 250 scientific articles and book chapters, and their 1995 review article is now the most widely-cited theoretical analysis of marriage published in the past century. On two separate occasions, the National Council on Family Relations has recognized Bradbury and Karney with the Reuben Hill Research and Theory Award for Outstanding Contributions to Family Science, and their co-authored text and accompanying video series, Intimate Relationships, has been used by thousands of undergraduates across the US and Canada. Translating and communicating research findings is central to their mission as scholars, and toward this end they founded and co-direct the Relationship Institute at UCLA, a center dedicated to engaging the general public with lectures, seminars, and workshops on new discoveries in the field of relationship science.

Professor Bradbury, a clinical psychologist, earned a BA from Hamilton College, an MA from Wake Forest University, and a PhD from the University of Illinois. His many awards for excellence in teaching, mentoring, and research include the Distinguished Early Career Award from the American Psychological Association and, most recently, an honorary academic degree, the Laurea Honoris Causa, from Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Milan, Italy. Bradbury consults extensively on marriage research and policies with government agencies, and for several years he served on the Scientific Advisory Board of eHarmony, a leading on-line dating site.

Professor Karney, a social psychologist, earned a BA from Harvard University and a PhD from the University of California, Los Angeles. An award-winning teacher and scholar, Dr. Karney was recognized as Teacher of the Year at the University of Florida and as a Distinguished Teacher in the UCLA Department of Psychology. A recipient of the Early Career Achievement Award from the International Association for Relationship Research, Dr. Karney has been awarded a series of multimillion-dollar federal research grants from the National Institutes of Health, has specialized expertise in the unique challenges faced by military families, and serves on the editorial boards of leading scientific journals in psychology and sociology.

Over the course of their twenty-year collaboration, Professors Bradbury and Karney have studied the conversations of thousands of couples to discover a surprising truth: although intimate partners routinely turn to one another for help in eating right and being physically active, they are uncertain about how to ask for and provide this vital form of support. Our ability to remain healthy is strongly affected by the life we share with our spouse or partner, and yet many of us – perhaps even most of us – are failing to take full advantage of all the health benefits that our relationships can provide. In their exciting new book, Love me Slender: How Smart Couples Team Up to Lose Weight, Exercise More, and Stay Healthy Together (Touchstone; February 4, 2014), Bradbury and Karney draw upon their extensive observations to explain why conversations about weight and diet can be so challenging––and how all couples can team up in their pursuit of better health.

Love Me Slender has a message that is as simple as it is profound: when partners work together, communicate, and support one another, they can team up to manage their weight and become, not only healthier, but closer as well. In their lectures, Professors Bradbury and Karney make their cutting edge research accessible to a wide range of audiences through an engaging style, concrete advice, and, most importantly, vivid case studies that bring the experiences of actual couples to life. Their talks identify the common traps that can make our conversations about weight and health so difficult, and offer real world solutions for escaping those traps. Audiences will learn how partners can support, rather than sabotage, one another’s health goals and how they can make real improvements in their lives, or maintain the healthy lifestyles they have already achieved.

Professors Bradbury and Karney are available to appear together or individually.
